Dear Diary,

Last week, Dad noticed that Pretty Girl (or P.G.), the cat, was acting differently than normal--there were changes in her meow and she was sleeping/lying on her bed more than normal and just seemed uncomfortable. So, since the vet had already closed for the day (it was a holiday, according to Dad), Dad said he would bring Pretty Girl in to work with him the next day and have the vet look at her, and he told me to leave her alone for the rest of the day so she could rest. I could tell Dad was worried about her, so I did just what he asked. That night, before we headed to bed, Dad and I went to check on her and found her hiding in one of her usual spots, behind some things near the washing machine. We said "good night" to her and went to sleep. The next morning, Dad and I found her lying on the dining room floor in a strange position. Now we knew something was very wrong! Dad called over to the vet and told them that he was going to bring her over, and he picked her up and ran out the door, leaving me behind. After what seemed like a lifetime of waiting, Dad finally came back. He was crying. I had only ever seen Dad cry a few times before, so I knew it was something really bad. Then I noticed that P.G. wasn't with him. He got down on his knees and hugged me and explained that P.G. didn't make it. And we both just sat there for a few minutes, hugging each other and Dad petting me.

I can't believe my little sister is gone... We had just started to become friends. She was just starting to trust/not despise me, and now she's gone and she'll never know what a great guy I can be! I miss her so much!

Well, Dad looks like he needs some cheering up, so I have to go!

Woof!

A note from the Stream Valley Staff:
Pretty Girl was relinquished to us as an unusual case a few years ago.  She had quite the list of chronic health issues, including inflammatory bowel syndrome and kidney disease.  It appears that she passed away suddenly due to a cardiac issue.
We'll all miss her terribly!  She was full of life and personality, and we share Diego's sentiments about some great hugs, particularly for Christian, during this tough time.

Dear Diary,

Over the past few months, Dad has commented that I had bad breath whenever I would get close to his face. He told me that might mean that I have some dental disease.  He also looked in my mouth and saw that there was gross stuff on my teeth, what he called tartar.  Then, a few weeks ago, I went in to the vet for a check-up and to update some vaccines, and Dr. Corey told me that I had what's known as grade 2 dental disease, and she recommended that I get a dental cleaning. So, Dad scheduled me for that procedure. Both Dad and I were pretty nervous about it, since I haven't had any sort of surgery while we've been living together, but we both knew that it needed to get done and that the staff at Stream Valley would take great care of me and make sure nothing bad happened to me.

The morning of the procedure, Dad brought me over to the hospital at 7 AM, which is way earlier than we normally get up, but it was necessary so that the proper bloodwork and preparations could be made before the cleaning.  Then, I had some blood drawn and one of the nice techs placed an  IV catheter in my front leg. Then, since I'm an older gentleman, they took some x-rays of my chest to make sure my heart and lungs were okay for the anesthesia.  Once that was done, someone put a syringe into my IV, and things started to get fuzzy, and I went to sleep for a while...

I'm not really sure what happened next, but when I woke up, my mouth was pretty sore, my teeth were sparkly white, and I was missing three of my front teeth. Dad told me that they took some x-rays of my mouth while I was asleep, and they found that even though my teeth looked fine on the outside, some had actually broken and had to be removed. So, I've had stitches in my mouth since then, and I've had to eat wet/mushy food for two weeks while my mouth heals. I also got some pain meds that I'm supposed to take once a day that should help. Plus, that just means that I get another treat to eat each day! Yay! The doctor also said I need to come back in for a one-week and two-week follow-up to make sure everything is healing properly.  The worst part of all this, though, is that I also can't play ball while my mouth heals! It's torture! I cannot wait until Dad can throw my ball for me again!

Once my mouth is healed, Dad says he is going to start brushing my teeth more regularly. He does it every once in a while already, but he plans to get better about doing it so that my mouth stays healthy and my teeth stay white and clean. I tolerate it pretty well, and it just means I get more attention from Dad, so I'm okay with it. Plus, the toothpaste is vanilla mint flavored, so that's pretty cool! It's tasty!

Well, Dad is opening a can of food that he got from the vet, and I am starving, so I'm going to go eat!

Woof!

Dear Diary,

I really don't like that it's so cold out these days! Don't get me wrong, I love the snow! But I don't like that Dad and I don't go for as many long walks as we do when it's warmer out. I know it's safer, so I don't freeze my paws off, but I really like to go outside and sniff stuff and pee on things. But at least Dad makes up for it by spending more time playing with me in our apartment. I just have to be careful that I don't knock things over when I'm running to get my toys!

As mentioned in my last entry, Dad and I celebrated my birthday. We went to Grammy's house, and they sang me that weird "Happy Birthday" song again. But then they made me a dog-friendly cake! It was so yummy! Penelope (Grammy's doggie) and I both enjoyed our pieces. And, my friend James came over, and he brought me a present! He gave me a cookie that was shaped like a bone and had "Happy Birthday" on it, and a pack of three awesome balls. They are seriously my favorite toys ever!

Well, I'm going to go look out the window at the snow, and try to convince Dad to go out and play in it. Wish me luck!

Woof!

Dear Diary,

I can't believe it's been over a year since Dad rescued me.  Man, we've been having so much fun!  And I've learned so much from him.  Here are some tricks/commands I know: "sit" (I knew that one already), "paw" (distinguishing between left and right), "high five," "down," "off" (for when I jump on something I'm not supposed to), and "go to your room."  Dad has

Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - Looking handsome after my groom!

gotten a little worried with me getting into the kitchen trash, so the bedroom has become my den; I stay in there whenever Dad goes out. My super comfy bed is in there, and I can look out into the yard and bark at the bunnies and squirrels.  Plus, Dad feeds me in there now, so it's a really positive experience.

Dad brought me to the groomers at Stream Valley again recently.  I was nervous about having to get a haircut again, but the lady who groomed me really helped me to relax.  She was so nice to me, and oh my goodness, she did a fantastic job!  Dad and I were both amazed by how awesome I looked afterward!  I was getting tons of compliments about how cute I was when we went out for walks.  Don't I look adorable?

Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - Playing with Penelope

Dad and I went to Grammy's again a few weeks ago.  Dad helped her plant some flowers and trees in the yard, and Penelope and I helped dig the holes.  I love getting to go to Grammy's house and run and roll around in the grass.  After we finished the yard work, Dad and Grammy took Penelope and me out into the woods behind the house.  We went down to the river that's out there, and I was certainly happy that I had been vaccinated for leptospirosis!  Dad explained that lepto is a bacteria that can be picked up from water outside, and it can make both pets and people sick.  Yuck!  When we got back to the house, Dad and Grammy checked us for ticks, and he found two on me.  Dad, however, found 12 on himself.  Too bad he can't be on Frontline Plus, too!

My birthday is coming up soon.  It's on June 26th.  I don't know what Dad has planned for it, but I will let you know in my next entry.  I will be turning 7 this year, which will make me a senior, technically.  I don't feel, act, or look like an old man, though, minus the few gray hairs in my beard.  I also need to go in to see the doctors at Stream Valley again soon because I will be coming up due for some shots.  I'm not nervous at all about that, though.  I love everyone who works there.  They are all super nice to me and give me tons of hugs and love.  And cookies!

Whoa!  Dad just picked up a tennis ball!  I think he's gonna throw it!  Gotta go!

Woof!

January 15, 2014

Dear Diary,

I’ve been having a really awesome time with my dad lately!  Can you believe we've been together now for over 8 months?  My goodness, how time flies!

Dad recently went on what he said was a “vacation,” whatever that means… All I know is that he went away for a really long time, and I missed him.  While he was gone I stayed with my friends at Stream Valley, which I thought was pretty cool.  Before he left, Dad reassured me that he would be back, because he could tell I was nervous about staying at the kennel after my time at the shelter, and I just had to trust him on that.  Thankfully, he came back about a week later.  During my stay at the kennel, I made tons of new dog friends, and got to see a lot of the human friends I know through Dad.   I had a really great time, and they made having to be away from Dad MUCH more bearable.

Dad and I have been going to Grammy’s house a lot lately.  It used to be that I couldn’t go with Dad when he went there because the dog that lived there didn’t like me, but he moved away, so now we both get to go!  And I love going there!  My Grammy gives me tons of hugs and love… and cookies!  Plus, she has a big backyard where I can run around with Dad.  Recently, I met the dog that lives next door to Grammy.  His name’s Scooter.  He’s a lot smaller than me, but we still had fun chasing each other in the yard.  We also went to Grammy’s for what Dad called Thanksgiving.  I still don’t understand the concept, but I know there’s a lot of food involved.  Dad wouldn’t let me have very much of that food, though, which I wasn’t too happy about.  But I did manage to snag a couple of pieces of delicious turkey and potato that happened to find their way to the kitchen floor.  Oh, and you’ll never guess what else happened that weekend!  So, Dad and Grammy took me to this interesting place called a pet supply store, which has some really cool stuff, and it’s a store that I can actually go inside!  Usually Dad has to leave me at home when he goes to the store, but not this one!  The floors there are really slippery, though, and it took me a long time to get used to it and figure out how to walk without my feet sliding out from underneath me.  Dad and Grammy laughed at me, which I did not appreciate.  Anywho, we went this big store because I needed a new collar, and they had some dogs there that were in cages.  Apparently, they were looking for new homes, like I had been just a short time ago.  Well, there was this one dog there that instantly caught Grammy’s attention.  Her name was Buffy.  Grammy got to take her out for a walk, and she and I really got along.  So, GRAMMY ADOPTED HER!!!!  Now I have another friend to run around and play with at Grammy’s house!  Her name is different now, though.  It’s Penelope.  She’s a lot of fun, and she gets along well with me and the cats that live at Grammy’s house.

On another trip to Grammy’s house, we celebrated what Dad calls Christmas.  This holiday involved a lot of food also, as well as presents!  My Grammy got me a cool red backpack, so I can carry snacks and stuff when Dad and I go hiking.  Cannot wait to get a chance to use it!

It snowed recently.  I really liked that!  I love the snow!  Obviously, I have seen snow before.  I mean, I’m six years old, of course I have.  But this was my first time experiencing it with Dad, so that made it special!  I really like to chomp on the snow off the ground while Dad and I are walking.  Or, Dad will throw a ball of it at me and I’ll catch it and eat it.  So fun!  I hope it snows again soon!

Oh, also, update on my health—we have finished up the three rounds of my medicine, and my friends at Stream Valley ran another test on my poo, and it came back negative this time!  Yay, no more hookworms!  I’ve also gained some weight, which is good, because I was slightly underweight when Dad brought me home from the shelter.  I'm now at the weight where Dad and Dr. Kirk wanted me to be, and Dad has cut my food back to an amount that should keep me steady at this weight.

Well, dad just put some food in my bowl, which means it’s dinnertime, so I shall end here.

Woof!

Dear Diary,

Dad and I celebrated my birthday recently.  Apparently, I'm now six years old!  Dad sang me this really weird song; he basically was just saying "Happy Birthday" over and over.  But it was overall a pretty cool day.  My Grammy and Uncle Jake came over to visit me on my special day, and we all went out for ice cream.  Dad gave me something called "Frosty Paws" while everyone else had something called "vanilla."  It was yummy!

Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - I feel comfy posing in the great outdoors because I'm vaccinated and protected! We went for our first real hike together last weekend, now that I have gotten my lyme and leptospirosis vaccines.  We went over to the reservoir and followed a path through the woods that lead to a dam.  There were a couple spots where we could even go right up to the water, and Dad let me go in! Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - Let's get hiking! He didn't let me off the leash, but I got to splash around and have some fun anyway!  It was awesome!  We had such a good time; I love being in the woods with Dad.  He did find some ticks on me afterward, though, but they were all dead when he found them, thanks to the Frontline.

I also got to go to work with Dad recently, to the Doggie Daycare, and I made some new friends!  I really liked getting to play with other dogs and not having to be away from Dad all day!  I hope he takes me to work with him again soon!

Well, it's getting pretty late, and it looks like Dad is getting ready for bed.  I guess I should go, too!

Dear Diary,

Last week I had my first vet visit!  It was awesome!  Dr. Kirk took a look at me, and she told me I was in great health!  She stuck me with a few needles, but Dad had explained to me beforehand that she was going to do that and that it was so I wouldn't get sick, so I was okay with it.  Plus, I was happy to be getting a big hug from the friendly assistant at my doctor's office.  Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - Vet Techs and Assistants give great hugs!Dad had to bring back a sample of my poo (can you believe it?!) so they could test it for parasites.  I am really glad they did because it came back positive for hookworms!  I didn't know what that was at first, but Dad showed me some information about them online, and then I understood why it was important that we get rid of them.  Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - My doctor is so thorough. She really cares about me!They are gross!  So, Dr. Kirk gave us some medicine that Dad mixed in my food for a few days.  Dad has to do it again in a few weeks, and then in a few months, but I don't really mind.  I mean, hey, all I have to do is eat my dinner and I can get rid of the hookworms? Sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me!

While we were at the vet, Dad also picked up this stuff called Heartgard Plus.  Dad told me that it was to prevent these things called heartworms, which pets get from mosquitoes, and they are really bad!  He said they could make me really sick, more than I even want to think about.  He gave me the first dose of the Heartgard, and it was delicious!  It's just another thing for me to eat, and I'm protected!  This stuff is so easy!  I just wish I could get that tasty treat more than once a month...

Aaaannndd the cat still hasn't warmed up to me yet.  I'm beginning to think she never will...I just want to be her friend.  Why can't she understand that?  Oh, well...Dad and I will keep trying to get her to like me.

Well, Dad put his shoes on , and he has my leash in his hand, so I think he's about to take me for a walk, which means I have to go!  SO EXCITED!!!!

Dear Diary,

I've been so busy with Dad (that's what I call Christian now)!  He has been teaching me new things, like "sit," which I've pretty much mastered.  Lately, Dad has been saying, "Down," to me and pointing at the ground.  I'm starting to think that means he wants me to lie down...it's part of what he calls "Training."  I'll figure it out!

We've also been going on walks every day.  Our typical walking spot is a park near our house.  I love all the neat smells, and there's so much that I can pee on!  We sometimes see kids there, and they seem to like me for the most part, although some are afraid of me.  I'll just keep trying to be extra friendly!

Hmmm...what else is there?  OH!  I finally met the cat this week!  She lives up in the loft in our apartment, and I often see her leering down at me, but occasionally she will come down and wander into the kitchen.  One time, I saw her and went to smell her and say, "Hi," but she just hissed at me and ran back up to the loft.  I don't think she likes me, but maybe she'll come around.

I've also discovered that there is another dog who lives with us, but I only ever see him in the corner of Dad's bedroom, surrounded by a pink frame.  He's so annoying!  He's big, black, and scruffy, and whenever I look at him, he stares back at me.  So I bark at him, and right at the same time, he barks back!  Dad's usually asleep when we encounter each other, but when I bark at this other dog, Dad wakes up and tells me, "Shhhh--that's just Mirror."  As if knowing his name makes it any better!  I don't care who he is; this is my house!

Well, I think I'm going to go curl up on the bed Dad got me and take a nap.  It's so cozy!

Woof!

Dear Diary,Broadlands / Ashburn, VA - Stream Valley Veterinary Hospital - My new Daddy and me!

I used to live at the SPCA.  But today, this guy named Christian put a collar and leash on me, with some shiny new tags, and he brought me home!  We met some time last week, and I was sad when he left and didn't take me with him, but he told me he'd be back for me.  I wasn't sure if I believed him, but guess what--HE CAME BACK!  My name at the shelter was Andy, but Christian decided he liked Diego better, so that's what I go by now.  I'm not quite used to the name yet, though.  Christian tells me he has a cat around here somewhere, but I haven't met her yet...Gosh, I hope she likes me!

Well, Christian is about to take me on our first walk together in our new neighborhood, so I gotta go.  Feeling hopeful!
